Serving in the legislature since February 2015, Avery serves on the following committees: Agriculture & Conservation, Consumer Protection, Counties & Townships,Transportation: Vehicles & Safety, and Veterans Affairs. Having grown up watching her father teach and after seeing our small schools struggling, Avery also has the privilege of serving on the Illinois House Task Force on School Funding.

Avery also actively sought legislative input from the 95th District through the creation of Advisory Committees on Veterans, Education, Agriculture, Millennials and Healthcare. Specifically after hearing from her mother, who works at a critical access hospital in Taylorville, Avery saw the need to dig deeper into rural healthcare policy and continues to explore these challenges through the Healthcare Advisory Board.

Avery’s top legislative initiatives are aimed at cleaning up government, fully funding schools, freezing property taxes and promoting the use of Illinois coal. Avery sponsored a bill to impose term limits on leadership in the General Assembly and co-sponsored a bill to end legislative pensions. Working with Sen. Andy Manar, Avery sponsored and passed the Bath Salts Prohibition Act to give our law enforcement more tools to combat the synthetic drug epidemic. Coming from a family of hunters, Bourne has also focused on policies that lighten burdens for hunters. She supported legislation to create a bobcat hunting season, sponsored a bill to create a Youth Trapping License and sponsored initiatives to make it easier for disabled veterans to hunt and fish.

Bourne received the National Outstanding Alumni of the Year Award from Alpha Chi and was honored as a Top Outstanding Young Person by the Illinois Jaycees.
